Shan Zhou 2015 Travel Fund Recipient's Comments on the Conference!
It may seem a bit overdue; however, two weeks later, the effects the CNSA Regional Meeting had on me are still lingering. I was really excited when I first received the email informing me that I received the Travel Fund for this meeting, that is, the coverage for the registration ticket (which was not cheap), transportation and accommodation. Just when I thought a free trip to Ottawa would be awesome on its own, the conference itself blew my mind away. As most of the attendants were third and fourth year nursing students, I got the perfect opportunity to have a panoramic view of what the nursing students, the future of nursing all around Ontario and Quebec, were like (and the adjectives I am looking for are vibrant, brilliant and creative) and to socialize with the “warriors” who have gained more experience than me in the academic trenches. Furthermore, the speakers and workshop leaders, coming from different facets of nursing, have outdone themselves in presenting us their own stories. Among topics as thought-provoking and contentious as physician-assisted suicide, and topics as heartrending as CHEO palliative care, I was particularly awe-stricken by the speech given by Leanne Olson on International Nursing. Working with Doctors Without Borders, Ms. Olson has provided different levels of care to people living in war-torn and underprivileged countries. Her passion, commitment, wit and hands-on manner in her provision of care in the most unusual circumstances has swooped me off my feet and forced me to reflect upon what nursing was meant for me. I have suddenly started to realize the depth and width of this profession. All in all, this trip to Ottawa was an unforgettable experience and it would not have happened without the Travel Fund provided by Trent. All I can say is, next year when the Travel Fund is up for grabs, don’t hesitate, otherwise you will be missing out on an amazing experience.
